What is Baking?

Baking is the process of validating transactions and adding new blocks to the Tezos blockchain. Bakers are rewarded with tez tokens for their contribution to the network.

Rewards

Bakers earn rewards for creating and attesting blocks. Rewards are distributed to delegators and stakers.

Requirements

To become a baker, you need at least 6,000 tez and a reliable server setup with proper security measures to host a Tezos node.

Stakers

Bakers can opt to receive staked tez from stakers, which increase the baker's staking rewards without transferring ownership of the tez. This process is part of the Tezos Proof-of-Stake (PoS) mechanism.

Governance Overview

Tezos has an on-chain governance mechanism that allows the protocol to upgrade itself through a formal proposal process. The Tezos Agora community platform is where governance discussions, proposals, and voting take place.

Proposal Period

Delegates propose and upvote protocol amendment proposals. If a quorum is met, the top-voted proposal moves to the next period.

Exploration & Cooldown

Delegates vote on whether to consider the proposal (Exploration period). If passed, a Cooldown period allows the community to test and prepare infrastructure.

Promotion & Adoption

Delegates make a final vote on whether to apply the proposal (Promotion period). If passed, the Adoption period allows adaptation before automatic activation.
